What is it?

Liposuction, fat suction, or suction lipectomy involves removing unwanted fat deposits from surface areas of the body, including the chin, neck, and cheeks; upper arms and upper breasts; the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles.

Liposuction is not an obesity treatment, but rather it is intended to correct those regions of the body in which accumulated fat that is unruly to diet and exercise persists.

About the procedure

  • The ideal candidates for liposuction are those who have a relatively normal weight but have accumulations of fat in localized areas. The most important thing to obtain good results is to have firm and elastic skin.

Recovery

  • After surgery, drainage tubes can be placed under the skin for 2 to 3 days to reduce the possibility of fluid accumulation.
A girdle, stockings, or elastic bandage will be placed over the treated area to control swelling and bleeding and to help the skin adjust to the new contour. It is usually necessary to wear it for 2 to 3 weeks, and then only during the day for a few more weeks, depending on the instructions of your plastic surgeon.
Antibiotics can be given to prevent infection.
The liposuctioned areas will be swollen and bruised, and you may have a burning sensation. The pain can be relieved with the medication prescribed by your plastic surgeon.
